Description

Mick Cawston – Deer in a snowy woodland glen

‘Deer in a Snowy Woodland Glen’ is a striking wildlife oil painting by Mick Cawston (1959–2006), celebrated for his evocative portrayals of the British countryside and its wildlife.

This composition captures a small group of red deer standing alert within a quiet, snow-covered woodland. Tall trees rise vertically through the scene, their trunks catching the glow of warm, low sunlight. The contrast between the cool blues and whites of the snow and the golden light filtering through the forest creates a sense of depth, calm, and atmosphere.

Cawston’s confident brushwork and subtle handling of light bring the scene to life, evoking the stillness of a winter morning in the British countryside. The painting is both tranquil and immersive, drawing the viewer into the heart of the woodland.

A fine example of British wildlife art, ‘Deer in a Snowy Woodland Glen’ would make a compelling addition to any Mick Cawston collection, as well as collections of countryside, sporting, and natural history subjects.

His paintings are notable not only for their accuracy but also for their quiet narrative quality—often suggesting a story or relationship beyond the frame. Rather than idealising his subjects, he portrayed them with honesty, dignity, and individuality.
