Alexander Charles Winter biography
Alexander Charles Winter (b. Bradenham, Norfolk) was a self-taught British painter whose life and career combined military distinction with a deep commitment to the arts. After serving with distinction during the First World War, he was commissioned into the newly formed Royal Air Force in 1918, rising to the rank of Group Captain before retiring in 1937.
Winter’s artistic talent developed independently of formal training, and he went on to exhibit widely, including with the Royal Scottish Academy, the New Society of Artists, and at the prestigious Paris Salon. He was also honoured with a solo exhibition at London’s Goupil Gallery — a notable achievement that underscored his growing reputation. Later in life, Winter settled in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where his work was shown at the Fermoy Art Gallery and remains part of the region’s artistic legacy.
