Description

George Frederick Scotson-Clark (1872-1927) was a poster designer and illustrator who was born in Brighton, Sussex. He was the son of Reverend Frederick Scotson Clark (1840-1883) a noted organ musician and composer. He attended Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) where he was a classmate of Aubrey Beardsley. It is notable that these two artists would go on to become leading poster designers of the late 19th and early 20th century after being exposed to the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the early 1890s. Scotson-Clark worked in the U.S.S. from 1891-1897 as stage and costume designer, designer of theatrical posters. He also became art editor of Century Magazine in the 1890’s, and designed book posters for Dodd, Mead. and posters for The Outing, (1896-1897). Returned to England in 1897 where he contined to produce theatrical posters.
