Lynton’s Christmas Miracle – Grayson Perry ‘Birth’

Richard Ansett’s ‘Birth’ lighting up Tim Williams Fine Art, Lynton

“Joy to the World..Good tidings we bring..!”

An award winning photographic portrait of the artist Grayson Perry is showing at a little gallery in a village tucked into the cliffs of North Devon.

The 1.2 meter light box portrait called BIRTH by Richard Ansett is illuminating Tim Willams Fine Art in Lynton with a “heavenly glow” that spills out onto the street and “can be seen for miles”. The gallery ironically is in the shadow of St Mary’s church which has the Star of Bethlehem atop the tower to guide the way.

“Not unlike the original stable in Bethlehem, the gallery is hosting a miraculous event.” says Richard Ansett

The portrait, that won first prize in the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, depicts Perry as his feminine persona holding a new born baby in the centuries old motif of mother and child. This one-off light box produced for the sensational exhibition at the Fitzrovia Chapel London and Somerset House has recently returned from a global tour with the World Photography Organisation.

Ansett says “This is an inclusive nativity to remind everyone that we are all worthy of the miracle of the Christmas message. There IS room at the Inn for everyone.”

Tim Williams of Tim Williams Fine Art says “Richard’s exhibition is a major coup for Lynton & Lynmouth. Our twin villages and the wider Exmoor area has a rich artistic history, from Turner, Shelley, Southey, Coleridge and Wordsworth in the early 19th century, the pre-raphaelites that visited and worked here in the mid-late 19th century and a phenomenal group of avant-garde modern artists in the early to mid-20th century. By exhibiting his work in our village Richard – one of the leading photographers working in the world today – is continuing this legacy. Both Richard and I share a dream of re-establishing Lynton & Lynmouth as a leading cultural centre in the South West.”

Local resident Bev Walden says “Absolutely fabulous! Richard’s photograph is stunning, and at night a curious pink light emanates from the gallery. After two lockdowns that have interrupted our tourist season, people are struggling both economically and mentally, this is just the sort of thing Lynton & Lynmouth needed. Something that cheers us up and attracts visitors!”
