Sven Brasch was born in Sealand, Denmark in 1886. He was a schoolmate of the physicist Niels Bohr before embarking on a study trip to Paris where he published some of his drawings for the first time. He returned to Copenhagen shortly before the outbreak of World War I and began working as an illustrator for newspapers and more importantly for film billboards. He became quite well known in his homeland, made a name for himself as a dandy and in the 1920s he was the most sought-after illustrator in Denmark, winning a gold medal for his poster designs in Paris at the Esposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. In the well-known annual publication “Posters and Publicity” the author Sidney R. Jones wrote in 1926: “…The Danish designer, Sven Brasch, is producing some of the most distinguished posters of today…”
He produced at least 500 posters of Danish but mostly American films that represented actors such as Charles Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton, Joan Crawford, Lon Chaney, Greta Garbo, John Gilbert. He also illustrated posters for theatrical performances, for advertising of various kinds and for important events in his city. His last commercial drawings were published in 1956, after which he faded into relative obscurity. He died almost forgotten at the age of 84 in 1970, in Glostrup near Copenhagen.
